art

During my many years as a seasonal field biologist, I made (and occasionally sold) art during the offseason. This page once served as a conduit for sales and commissions, but it now serves as a relatively static digital archive. Still, I hope you enjoy!

artist’s statement

In both art and science, I am drawn to the relationships between patterns and processes: how patterns nest, scale, and/or change with time, space, and/or disturbance, and, in so doing, provide insight into the process(es) that beget them. What can the apparent shape of a phenomenon tell us about its underlying processes? How does that shape influence contextual function, and vice-versa? Where there is continuity of form, what allows it to persist? Where there is dissonance or divergence, is there a cause? How much of the pattern is information, how much is self-organization, and how much is stochasticity?

Artmaking allows me to explore the interplay between multiple inputs and emergent patterns at different scales, in a context that doesn’t demand answers. Artmaking reconnects me with what wonder feels like. It energizes me to prioritize good science over commodifiable science. It reminds me that deep observation is an invaluable precursor to deep knowledge.

I humbly encourage you to try it sometime.
